The modern phenomenon of social GAA has recently taken root in Europe, but unlike the evolution story of other codes of the GAA, the interest in this sector (specifically G4MO) soared from the outset, reshaping expectations for what recreational GAA could become in Europe.
2024 marked a breakthrough year for social Gaelic games. We had two standout G4MO events: One hosted in Barcelona and another hosted in Rennes – both drew remarkable interest, with over 200 teams applying to participate in each. In another exciting first, Sitges GAA proudly hosted Europe’s inaugural Over-35s event, laying further groundwork for this rapidly growing sector.
Building on that momentum, 2025 ushered in a transformative milestone: the appointment of a dedicated Recreational Officer for Gaelic Games Europe. Charlie Jameson, a passionate coach who is active in all four codes, and a referee with nearly five years of experience in the UK & Europe stepped into the role to lead this exciting new chapter.
Tasked with supporting all social & recreational GAA initiatives such as Gaelic4Mothers&Others (G4MO), Dads & Lads, and Over-35s groups, Charlie’s role has already proven crucial – not only in organising events, but in unlocking new recreational avenues of participation, community connection, and club engagement across the continent.

That momentum only accelerated in late 2025, as all three experimental events from 2024 were successfully repeated – with a new G4MO event in Lisbon added to the calendar. 150 players participated in the largest ever GAA event to take place in Portugal, with great support from the Irish embassy in Portugal. This was the largest GAA event in Portugal to date.
Amid this surge in activity, Charlie Jameson took a strategic leap forward: shifting focus from the pitch to the classroom.
Recognising that long-term sustainability for Gaelic games in Europe depends not only on club activity but also on education, Charlie launched a bold new initiative — not aimed directly at students, but at those who shape school sport: PE teachers. Drawing on his grassroots experience in southern Germany, he set out to equip educators across the continent with the knowledge and tools to bring Gaelic games into their schools, from the ground up.
Laying a Foundation for the Future
Today (Wednesday, 26 November 2025), Charlie leads a landmark workshop for 72 PE teachers from 32 international schools across Europe. The aim is simple but significant: introduce teachers to the benefits of recreational Gaelic games, empower them with resources, and begin embedding GAA in school communities across the continent.
Supporting him on the day is Shane Keegan, a well-known figure from Laois GAA with deep coaching credentials. Shane brings a wealth of experience from the game – including managerial stints with senior county and club teams, and now serves as Head of Coaching & Games Development for Laois GAA. His expertise and presence underlines the growing alignment between GAA in Ireland and Europe when it comes to sharing coaching knowledge and community best practices.

In today’s sporting landscape, more and more adults are returning to physical activity later in life – or trying it for the very first time. Recreational formats like G4MO and Dads & Lads offer the perfect entry point: no trials, no pressure, no prior experience required. Just camaraderie, movement, and a shared sense of purpose.
The benefits of engaging this demographic are significant. These programmes foster healthier lifestyles, create inclusive social spaces, and deepen community ties – all while expanding the reach of Gaelic Games to new audiences. All while fortifying our communities with more volunteers!
