With the winter not quite behind us, the footballers of the Iberian Central Region came out of footballing hibernation in Tres Cantos, Madrid to get the 2018 version of the championship under way. The defending Iberian champions, Madrid Harps Men, were the hot favourites to win their home tournament after a stunning debut season in 2017 the Tres Cantos Ladies looking to follow up with another sub regional “campeonato”.
With five teams in the men’s, Madrid Harps, Madrid O’Donnells, San Vicent, Valencia, Zaragoza and Barcelona Gaels, there was just one group with all teams playing each other once before the top two playing a final. The ladies, with six teams, Tres Cantos, Madrid Harps, Madrid O’Donnells, Barcelona Gaels, San Vicent, Valencia and Zaragoza, two groups were required.
In the Ladies, Tres Cantos and Madrid Harps both emerged as winners to face off in the final. With the evening closing in the ladies final was first up and in a very competitive game the Harps overcame a strong Tres Cantos challenge to emerge victors.
In the men’s group, the Harps won all their games as did Barcelona and San Vicent except for the draw against each other after a very late fight back from the Valencianos.
But in the end, it was Barcelona who had the superior score difference and thus qualified for the final With some quick pitch adjustments, the men’s final was ready for thrown in. Barcelona Gaels came hungry and prepared and gave Madrid plenty of problems but in the end the defending champions emerged victorious.
