There aren’t many rivalries in European GAA as fierce as the one between Liffré & Rennes. The two kingpins of the Brittany League in France have been doing battle for years now and there has never been much between the two sides. Liffré have had the upper hand in the league however, having won an incredible 11 titles heading into this season. They once again held the advantage ahead of this crucial league match with Rennes which took place on Saturday, March 10th with a 3 point lead in the league over their bitter rivals courtesy of a 4 point victory in the reverse fixture back in January. Rennes needed a victory to close the gap & send another league season down to the wire, whereas Liffré knew that a victory would sow up their 12th League title.
Matches between this pair rarely disappoint and this encounter certainly lived up to the stakes. The first half was a tense affair with each team trading points. It was looking like Liffré would take the slenderest of leads into the half-time break with the score locked at 0-7 (7) – 0-6 (6) however, a Liffré goal just before the ref blew for the break meant that the title holders had some breathing space. Liffré were thrilled to take a 4 point lead into the break with the score at 1-7 (10) – 0-6 (6).
Liffré extended that lead to 6 points with another goal in the second half to leave the scores at 2-8 (14) – 0-8 (8) and looked to be coasting towards their 12th title. Rennes had other ideas however, and refused to throw in the towel. Both teams were knocking over points but Rennes really made Liffré sweat when they knocked in their first goal of the day to make it a 3 point game at 2-12 (18) – 1-12 (15). Despite the relentless pressure from the men in red & black, the Liffré defence would not be breached again and the match finished 2-12 (18) – 1-12 (15). Heartbreak for Rennes once more but congratulations once again to Liffré who will need an extension on their trophy cabinet at this rate.
