Iberian Champions Retain Their Titles In Ladies and Men’s

The 14th edition of the Iberian Football Finals took place last Saturday, May 26th in the Galician city of La Coruña. It was the second year in a row that the host club, Fillos de Breogán, organised these finals and with 23 teams participating in 46 games on the 4 pitches of the Centro Deportivo La Torre on the Atlantic coast, this edition was even bigger than last year’s. 295 adults took part along with 25 youths in other various events organised by the Asociación Galega de Futból Gaelico.

Torre de Hercules, La Coruña

The weather forecast was for thick cloud and rain but luckily the rain only threatened and never materialised, but the sun failed to make an appearance. Indeed, Hercules Tower, just a few hundred metres away could barely be seen as the games got underway. And at 10am underway they got on all 4 pitches and were full of action till just after 6pm.

In the Ladies’ it was the hosts, Fillas de Breogán, who were not only defending their crown, but going for a remarkable three in a row. The “daughters of Breogán” who played their very first game of Gaelic Football in 2012, were on home turf and must surely have fancied their chances. They weren’t to be disappointed.

In the Men’s event it was Madrid Harps who were the team to beat. Having won in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia they travelled with a strong squad in search of their fifth Iberian Championship in a row. They weren’t to be disappointed either.
