The Chairperson is the principal officer of Gaelic Games Europe. As well as chairing Management and Executive Committee and other meetings, the Chairperson has prime responsibility for ensuring that Gaelic Games Europe (GGE) is well organised, well managed and actively working to promote, develop and administer Gaelic games in Europe.

The Chairperson should be dedicated to the job, have good communication skills, have the ability to delegate key tasks and above all, be a person of integrity within the organisation. The contribution of the Chairperson to the effective working of GGE can never be underestimated.

The Chairperson’s principal responsibilities include:

  • Providing effective leadership
  • Being strategic, planning ahead and prioritising
  • Running meetings efficiently and effectively
  • Ensuring that rules, bye-laws, regulations and policies are adhered to
  • Delegating tasks to Officers and sub-committees
  • Supporting Officers, clubs, committees and regions
  • Communicating and motivating members/clubs
  • Ensuring coherence between various activities
  • Representing GGE at various meetings and events
  • Meeting key stakeholders and lobbying on behalf of GGE
  • Upholding the mission, vision and values of the GAA

Much of the Chairperson’s work revolves around meetings which includes multiple tasks and duties such as:

  1. Chairing Annual Convention, MC and other meetings efficiently and effectively by; –
    a. establishing goals and motivating members to work towards achieving them
    b. coordinating, planning and reviewing GGE activities
    c. planning ahead and delegating tasks as appropriate
    d. upholding all relevant Rules & Regulations
    e. keeping the Executive & MC informed of significant issues
  2. When chairing meetings, the Chair’s role includes; –
    a. planning the agenda with the Secretary (or other relevant Officer)
    b. ensuring that participants keep to the Agenda and stay focused on the item under discussion
    c. ensuring there is genuine debate by involving as many people as possible
    d. ensuring that participants discuss issues, make ‘Points of Order’ and ask questions – ‘through the chair’
    e. agreeing follow-up actions at each stage: i.e. what, by who, and by when
    f. ensuring everyone understands decisions before moving on to the next topic
    g. exercising the casting vote in the event of a split decision
