Officer’s Roles

There is a wide range of responsibilities required to manage, maintain and develop Gaelic games in Europe. As such the roles involved are both varied and diverse in terms of skills required but all require dedication and commitment.

All Management Committee (MC) Officers are expected/entitled to;

  1. Attend and contribute to scheduled meetings. As stated in GAA Rule 3.18 (d) “any officer, without just cause, shall be dismissed from the MC and any subcommittees should they fail to attend for three consecutive meetings”. There is some discretion here but the main thing is to keep in touch with the Chairperson and make him/her aware of any mitigating circumstances although nobody has to divulge any personal issues.
  2. Respond to meeting invitations as soon as possible and notify the Chairperson or Secretary if you cannot attend or have to cancel at short notice.
  3. Within reason, be available to respond promptly to emails and other communications.
  4. Whenever possible, volunteer for a fair share of tasks that may arise but don’t fall within any other officer’s responsibilities.
  5. Vote on issues that require a decision by the MC (or subcommittee of which they are a member of) even if an issue is not within their area of responsibility.
  6. Always keep the interests of Gaelic Games Europe foremost. We are not on the MC or sub-committees to represent our clubs or any other personal interests. Of course an officer may raise an issue if they feel it is unfair to a region or club that they happen to be a member of.
  7. Not divulge any sensitive information that may be discussed at the MC or a sub-committee. This includes sharing WhatsApp messages, emails or any files that are clearly sensitive and still under discussion. It also includes not divulging other officer’s opinions as expressed in the MC or sub-committee. At times, it may be appropriate to do so but if there is any doubt, advice should be sought from the Chairperson.
