The 2017/2018 edition of the Andalucian League got under way on October 14th. Most Gaelic Football players look forward to their end of year break around this time but they are blessed with the weather in southern Spain and can pretty much play all year round. The first match of this year’s league saw last year’s defending champions Costa Gaels take on last year’s runners up Gibraltar Gaels. The fierce rivals needed a play off match to decide the winner of the league last time out after the pair finished on 10 points each and Gibraltar were out to avenge that loss.
Matches between these two clubs are always high scoring and this time was no exception with 47 points being slotted by the time the ref blew the final whistle. However, Gibraltar will have to wait until the return match to get their revenge as Costa Gaels once again got the upper hand, running out 4-16 (28) – 1-16 (19) winners to claim the first points of the 2017/2018 season.
There was also a Ladies challenge match played on the day with Gibraltar Gaels taking on Celta Malaga in what will hopefully be the first of many Ladies matches in the south of Spain this year. You can see some great action shots of the matches here.
